Bactron is one of the trade names for the combination of sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim . Bactron is a broad spectrum antibiotic drug that is frequently used against infections resistant to other antibiotics. This drug is marketed in Venezuela under this name, which varies depending on the laboratory that produces it.The antibiotic Bactron, being broad spectrum, is used against various infections and diseases. It is applied to urinary, respiratory, digestive and auditory infections , and is also used to treat skin conditions.

This drug is effective against some streptococci, staphylococci, bacilli, protozoa, and various anaerobic microorganisms , which is why it is used against infections such as sinusitis, otitis, and some vaginal and intestinal infections.

The Bactron serves to:

  • Treat infections in general
  • Treat urinary and genital infections
  • Treat infectious diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Treat respiratory infections
  • Treat wound and skin infections

Treat infections in general

Bactron, being a broad spectrum antibiotic, has a wide variety of uses, mainly against urinary diseases and respiratory infections. It is also used against genital, skin and ear infections.

Bactron is effective against conditions such as:

  • Abscesses
  • Tonsillitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Cystitis
  • Anger
  • Bacillary dysentery
  • Enteritis
  • Enterobacter
  • Enterocolitis
  • Escherichia coli infection
  • Pharyngitis
  • Boils
  • Gonorrhea
  • Haemophilus influenzae infection
  • Infected wounds
  • Klebsiella infection
  • Listeriosis
  • Morganella morganii infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Nocardiosis
  • Osteomielitis
  • Otitis
  • Proteus vulgaris infection
  • Proteus mirabilis infection
  • Paratifoidea
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Piodermias
  • Pneumocystis carinii infection
  • Prostatitis
  • Sonnei infection
  • Septicemia
  • Shigella flexneri infection
  • Sinusitis
  • Staphylococcus aureus infection
  • Streptococcus pneumonia infection
  • Typhoid
  • Tonsillitis
  • Toxoplasmosis

Bactron is ideal for treating a variety of bacterial infections.

Treat urinary and genital infections

Bactron is widely used to treat both male and female urinary tract and genital infections. It is effective against bacteria such as:

  • Escherichia coli
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Enterobacter
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Klebsiella

Therefore, it is used as part of the treatment for gonorrhea, chlamydia, prostatitis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis and other diseases that affect the urinary tract.

It is important to note that this drug can only be used against some bacteria, so it does not work against other sexually transmitted infections, some bacterial vaginosis or diseases caused by viruses.

Treat infectious diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders

Bactron is effective only against certain pathogenic microorganisms, therefore it is not usually used as the main drug in intestinal infections, but only in those that are sensitive to sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, their components, or in those that are resistant to drugs such as methicillin, penicillin and some other antibiotics.

Bactron fights some bacteria that cause intestinal problems such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Enteritis
  • Dysentery
  • Anger
  • Ulcers

Treat respiratory infections

The combination of sulfamethoxazole with trimebutine is used to fight respiratory infections, mainly those caused by:

  • Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Pneumocystis carinii
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Among other

Bactron has been shown to be effective in treating some cases of pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and other respiratory tract infections.

Before Bactron is administered, laboratory tests must be carried out to determine the microorganism causing the infection, since there are bacteria resistant to the components of this medicine.

It is not recommended to take Bactron to treat flu or respiratory diseases caused by viruses, unless the health professional considers it necessary, for example, in cases of opportunistic bacteria.

Treat wound and skin infections

Bactron has been successfully applied against resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus . This microorganism causes several diseases, among which are skin infections such as:

  • Scaled skin syndrome
  • Impetigo
  • Coals
  • Acne
  • Necrotizing infection

By interfering with the synthesis of purines and folic acid necessary for bacteria, they cannot continue to reproduce. A bacteriostatic effect is produced in them , which does not mean that the bacteria die, but that they do not reproduce. This situation will leave the living bacteria alone, until they reach old age and die. Therefore, it is possible to contain Staphylococcus aureus .

Bactron is also used to treat lesions and infected wounds, including it as a postoperative prophylactic in some cases.

In patients suffering from meningitis, especially that caused by Listeria monocytogenes , Bactron, acting as a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimebutine, can be used as an alternative medicine to other antibiotics.

How does Bactron work?

The mechanism of action of the Bactron is based on the chemical activity of each of its components. The  sulfamethoxazole , belonging to the group of the sulfonamides, inhibits an enzyme in bacteria called dihydropteroate synthetase . As this enzyme is repressed, the generation of folic acid, necessary for the formation of DNA in bacteria, is stopped.

On the other hand, trimethoprim is responsible for inhibiting the enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase , which also intervenes in the synthesis of purines, necessary for the formation of DNA in bacteria. Bactron has bacteriostatic properties, as it prevents the DNA of bacteria from being synthesized and from reproducing.

Bactron contraindications

Bactron is a drug whose administration must be under medical supervision or completely avoided, in cases of people such as:

  • Pregnant women
  • Lactating women
  • Minors
  • Patients taking warfarin
  • Patients allergic to sulfamethoxazole
  • Patients allergic to trimethoprim

Bactron side effects

Bactron can cause side effects, since it alters the normal microbiota of the body while attacking pathogenic bacteria. For this action, they can be presented:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vaginal infections
  • Other disorders related to the use of antibiotics

The indiscriminate or unnecessary use of Bactron can lead to resistance in surviving bacteria , so common microorganisms can become more aggressive and difficult to treat, as happened with MRSA ( Methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus ).

Bactron can also cause other common disorders such as:

  • Allergies
  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Eruptions

In severe cases, there are:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Bleeding (if combined with warfarin)
  • Clotting problems (if combined with warfarin)

In the event of any abnormality, it is necessary to suspend the medication and go to the emergency room.
